Sheila's Story: I'm not allowed to save money anymore

I am on income support. When the NDP were in charge I was getting $800/month and was allowed to save up to $2000.

When the UCP took over I went down to $312/month, and I am only allowed to save $200.

I also receive assistance from Lethbridge Housing, however after I pay my share of the monthly rent, I have $76 remaining in my account. I emailed the welfare office, only to get a reply saying I should take a money management course. Then I wrote the social services minister, only to get a form letter. I am now up to $399/month and my share of the rent has risen to $203/month.

I collect bottles and cans, but two bags are worth around $11.00.  My sister has been helping me and I get GST and Carbon Tax rebates. But those rebates will disappear if Mr. Poilievre and his party win the next federal election. In October of next year, I will turn 65 but it will be tough until then.

I have tried finding a job; however, no one would hire me once I mentioned I had Crohn's. Not to mention at 64 I am experiencing age-related health issues such as fallen arches, and hearing impairments. My eye doctor says I have a cataract growing in one eye. Many businesses would prefer to hire students, who are more tech savvy, or they hire Temporary Foreign Workers. Due to my Crohn’s my employment history on my resume is inconsistent which also causes issues when I apply for jobs.
